Americans Look for 1st Major Sweep Since 1982

The year was 1982. Craig Stadler claimed the Masters, Tom Watson took home both the U.S. Open and The Open Championship, and Raymond Floyd won the PGA Championship. That was the last time golf’s four major championships were swept by American golfers.

2019 presents the latest chance at the American sweep.

Tiger Woods kicked off the major season with a thrilling victory at The Masters in April. Then Brooks Koepka successfully defended his title at the PGA Championship in May. Yesterday, Gary Woodland kept the sweep hopes alive with a victory at Pebble Beach in the U.S. Open. All that’s left for the Americans is to go into Northern Ireland to capture the Claret Jug.

Since 1982, American golfers have won three of the sports four major championship titles 17 times. On three of those occasions they won the first three majors and lost the chance at the sweep in the final tournament. Those years were 1995, 1998, and 2015 (during these years the PGA Championship was the final tournament. The Open Championship was 3rd in the circuit).

In 1995 Australian Steve Elkington took home his only major title to ruin the sweep. Vijay Singh…
